For decades, Grace taught on the Red Lake Indian Reservation where she saw extreme poverty and extreme brokenness, all at 40 below in the winter. Her high school students saw their mothers and fathers die, their brothers and sisters die, even their own children die, and she would ask them how they even have the strength to get out of bed. One boy answered, “Well, somebody has to tend the fire.” One way or another, that’s why we put one foot in front of the other.
